Huckleberry Finn (2003/2016) Mark Twain. 18 inches long x 16 inches wide x 3 inches tall. A one-of-a-kind artists' book inspired Twain's text.

Medium/Materials: Flotsam wood from the Mississippi River. Wood cylinders. Sinew thread. Tin. Miniature reproduction of the first edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Pages from a disbound copy of an Illustrated Junior Library edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Special instructions: Miniature book facsimilie of the first edition of Huckleberry Finn is inside the trunk on the deck of the raft. To open trunk, remove the tiller’s line from the cleat on the deck, and move the tiller so the lid can be lifted.

Artists' statement: Huckleberry Finn has always been a favorite book. The passages we most enjoy are found in Twain’s descriptions of Huck and Jim’s conversations as they roll down the river. This book is part of a series of explorations we have made to find alternative structures to use for our artists’ books. In this series we have experimented with the possible intersections of the codex and scroll formats. In this work Huck and Jim’s rolling informed our artistic imagination and led us to imagine how sections of a story might be scrolled and stored in various compartments that would create the structure of a raft.
