Blush of Winter Moon

A beautiful book by Ms. Machmiller, acknowledged and respected poet in the traditional haiku form in English, includes:

• The tradition of a single season word (or phrase), which the Japanese call the kigo, in each haiku. [See 2008 YTHS Retreat at Asilomar for her additional comments on the kigo.]
• The poem to be presented in three lines with a syllable count of 5, 7, and 5 syllables in the first, second, and third lines respectively.

Particularly wonderful aspects of the book are:

• Beautiful sumi-e on a quarter or more of the pages. My favorite sumi-e is a running fence edging a snowy field, with this unusually laid-out haiku:

  the remaining snow in isolated patches: our separate lives
