Why make books out of ukuleles? Why not! These fun and engaging works created from functioning musical instruments incorporate a variety of bindings and techniques. Associated programming includes:

Previous binding experience recommendedWhat does a ukulele have in common with a camera? They both make terrific books! Learn basic techniques for making books out of found objects. On day one, turn a ukulele into an accordion. Time will be allocated to add text/content to the book, so bring art supplies and musical imagery. The second day will be spent making books out of cameras; supply your own old camera, photographic images and ideas for text to add to the book. Inexpensive thrift store cameras or vintage cameras both work well for this project.
$225 ($200 members) + $50 supply fee

Don't miss this family friendly exhibition about the development of a written Hawaiian alphabet. Presented in three “chapters,” the exhibit explores: the history of the written Hawaiian alphabet and its use in print; an exploration of the variety of literature about, by and for Hawaii and finally; an alphabetical introduction to the museum’s vast material culture collection in both English and Hawaiian. A treat for both families and bibliophiles, the exhibit features early printed Hawaiian works, a printing press, material culture objects and one-of-a-kind art books. The project is designed to engage public and private schools with meaningful and engaging curricula for teachers and students. Public programs:

Peter and Donna Thomas will teach a hands-on ukulele book workshop on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Skyline Room. Please register starting Wednesday, October 5 at the Reservation Desk in person or by calling (562) 916-1388. Peter and Donna are the authors of More Making Books By Hand and also the creators of the Ukulele book series on display throughout the Library.
