Prize-winning poet Jack Marshall
was born in 1936 in Brooklyn to Jewish parents who emigrated from Iraq and Syria. At 19 he
shipped out as a deckhand on a Norwegian freighter to West Africa. Returned to New York,
he worked on 42nd Street, attended night classes in poetry with Stanley Kunitz and Robert Lowell,
and moved to the Lower East Side, taking part in the growing poetry scene there. He married
and then in 1968 moved with his family to San Francisco. He has published twelve books of
poetry, the most recent being Gorgeous Chaos: New & Selected Poems (Coffee House Press, 2002),
which won a Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, and a collection of new poems, The Steel Veil,
published by Coffee House Press in Fall, 2008. His memoir, From Baghdad to Brooklyn, was a PEN Center USA finalist.
