John Balaban is the author of twelve books of poetry and prose, including four volumes which together have won The Academy of American Poets’ Lamont prize, a National Poetry Series Selection, and two nominations for the National Book Award.  His Locusts at the Edge of Summer: New and Selected Poems won the 1998 William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America.  He was named the 2001-2004 National Artist for the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.  In 2003, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. His most recent books are Path, Crooked Path (2006, Copper Canyon Press), Remembering Heaven’s Face: A Story of Rescue in Wartime Vietnam (2002, University of Georgia Press), and Spring Essence: The Poetry of Ho Xuan Huong (translation, 2000, Copper Canyon Press) In addition to writing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, he is a translator of Vietnamese poetry, and a past president of the American Literary Translators Association.  Balaban is Poet-in-Residence and Professor of English in the creative writing program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Amber Coverdale Sumrall’s second collection of poems is Refuge (2007, Hummingbird Press).  She was born in California and has lived in Santa Cruz County since 1972.  She has edited or co-edited thirteen anthologies including, most recently, Still Heart: Reflections from The Hermitage and Storming Heaven’s Gate: Spiritual Writings by Women.  She leads Write to the Heart workshops: journal, poetry, and editing, and writing retreats at The Hermitage in Big Sur, St. Francis Retreat in San Juan Bautista, Mission San Antonio in Jolon and in Ireland.  For twenty years she has co-produced In Celebration of the Muse, an annual literary event featuring Santa Cruz women writers.  Her first book of poems, Litany of Wings, was published in 1998 by Many Names Press.  She spends much of her time watching, listening to, and feeding the dozens of birds that frequent her creekside home in Soquel.
