Saturday, October 21 at 2:00 PM:  The 2006 Poetry Bus Tour Readings and Workshops

At First Congregational Church Fellowship Hall, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz [map].  $5 admission for both readings, $20 for a workshop.

The 2006 Poetry Bus Tour, sponsored by Wave Books of Seattle, is a tour of 50 cities in the U.S. and Canada in 50 days.  Reading venues include the The Bumbershoot Music Festival in Seattle, The Poetry Farm in Orfordville Wisconsin, Chicago’s Green Mill (where slam poetry was born), Le Salon Vert in Montreal, The Burren Irish Pub in Boston, the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, First Congregational Church in Santa Cruz, Club Deluxe in San Francisco, and the Space Needle in Seattle.  The tour began September 4 and will continue until October 27.  An internet blog at www.poetrybus.com records the adventures of the tour.

The Santa Cruz event will include

  • An Afternoon Reading from 2:00 to 4:00,
  • Three Mini-Workshops from 4:00 to 5:30, and
  • An Evening Reading from 7:00 to 9:00.

The two Readings will include eighteen visiting poets from the tour and fourteen local poets, with a mix of visiting and local poets in both readings.  Readers so far: Charles Atkinson, Joshua Beckman, Gillian Conoley, Graham Foust, Nancy Gauquier, Roxi Hamilton, Christian Hawkey, Cole Heinowitz, Noelle Kocot, Stephen Kuusisto, Anthony McCann, Jim Maughn, The Reverend Dr. Thomas C. Marshall, Hermie Medley, Catherine Meng, Brian Morrisey, Maggie Nelson, D.A. Powell, Doren Robbins, Matthew Rohrer, C.J. Sage, Standard Schaeffer, Tilly Washburn Shaw, Debra Spencer, Juliana Spahr, Chris Stroffolino, Amber Coverdale Sumrall, Chad Sweeney, Jennifer K. Sweeney, Ken Weisner, Joe Wenderoth, Rob Wilson, Gary Young, Stephanie Young, and Matthew Zapruder.   Bios of the visiting readers are available on the Bio Page.  The $5 admission covers both readings.

The 90-minute Workshops cost $20 and will be limited to twelve participants each.  Gary Young, Stephen Kuusisto and Anthony McCann will lead the workshops.  As of Monday October 16, there are several spaces left in each workshop.  Call Len Anderson at (831) 464-8983 to register for a workshop or for more information.

The Church has two parking lots with 150 spaces.  If you park on the street, be aware that there are areas where parking is not allowed and be sure to respect the privacy of neighbors and the safety issues involved.
