Definition: A tumor or group of cells that has the earmarks of carcinoma but is not yet malignant or cancerous, since it hasn't invaded the surrounding tissue. In the case of intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, etc) the basement membrane under the squamous layer is still intact.

Pronunciation: kar sin OH ma in SY too • (noun)

Also Known As: preinvasive cancer, pre-malignant lesion, severe dysplasia, CIN 3 (or VIN 3, etc.)

Alternate Spellings: carcinoma in-situ, carcinoma insitu
