Definition:
The lining of the uterus. Each month during a woman's childbearing years, it proliferates
(builds up) in order to provide nourishment for the newly-developing embryo. If
there is no fertilized egg (ovum), the endometrium breaks down and is sloughed
off in the form of a menstrual period. The endometrium is the most common site
of uterine cancer, and cancer here is called endometrial cancer.
