Q&A of the Week: How many Cone Biopsies are OK?
Lucia writes: I had a cone biopsy a few years ago for severe dysplasia. Now I have another bad Pap, and I see the doctor next week. In the meantime, I'm going crazy. What if I need another cone? Can my cervix take it? Will I be able to have children?
Lucia - Everything depends on the grade of dysplasia you have, and how much was taken in the original biopsy. First of all, don't jump the gun - you may not have severe dysplasia, and may be able to just be watched. CIN I often reverses itself. CIN II can sometimes be treated with cryosurgery (freezing). If is it is a higher grade, the doctor very well might want to do either another cone biopsy or a LEEP. Most of the time, it's possible to do two cone biopsies on the same cervix, unless the first cone was unusually large. While you are right that this could cause problems with the strength of your cervix when it comes to pregnancy, only the doctor can tell you about your individual case.
Best wishes to you. I hope the news is good next week.
