The Belted Kingfisher is the only kingfisher in most of North America. They are stocky and short-legged, with a large head and bill, and a ragged crest.Male Black-throated Blue Warblers are dark blue with black throats and white undersides; while the female is largely drab olive. Both sexes have a prominent white patch at the base of their primaries. Small white patch in wing can be inconspicuous in immatures.
Belted Kingfishers prefer a sandy or gravely bank in which to construct their nests which can reach lengths of 15 feet but 3 to 6 feet is more common. The nest will usually be located about two feet from the top of the bank. They feed primarily on fish and lay 5 to 8 white eggs.

Habitat: Common and conspicuous along rivers and brooks, ponds, lakes, and estuaries.
Voice: A loud, dry rattle.
Other Behavior: Generally solitary. Rare in winter north into summer range.
