About D & D Wildlife Photography

black-tailed_buck.jpg D & D Wildlife Photography began as an extension of the Audubon Cooperative System at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, California. Bruce, a course marshal, was approached by Pasatiempo landscape artist Francine Moody to do the wildlife photography for their Audubon Program.

Immediately, Bruce realized he needed special equipment. Professional bird photographer Howard Jameson in Saratoga came to the rescue, setting him up with good Canon cameras and high-powered lenses. Thus began the process of learning how to capture wildlife images at Pasatiempo, and putting on slide shows for their annual brunch following the bird walk.

Through the Pasatiempo Audubon Program, Bruce came into contact with Delaveaga Golf Course superintendent Don Paul. Delaveaga was doing a similar program, and together with Don Paul and Pasatiempo's Vern Johnson, they set in place sixty-five bird boxes built by a young man working on his Eagle Scout badge.

In the months that followed, Bruce accumulated a number of good slides. Sherry Howe, owner of The Bird Feeder Emporium in Santa Cruz, suggested that he should make bird cards to be displayed at the store. The evolution of this idea was that Pasatiempo and Delaveaga should also have cards available in their pro shops for an outreach program.

The next acquisition was film scanning equipment and a printer capable of high-resolution printing with archival inks. Bruce uses Canon T90 cameras, a Canon FD 300mm lens with a 1.4 Extender, a CanonFD 500mm lens with a Canon 1.4 Extender and a Canon FD 800mm lens with a Canon 1.4 Extender for his photo ops and Fujichome Provia 100F slide film.

Bruce is a familiar figure around the county's bird haunts. Harkins Slough, Quail Hollow Ranch, Schwann Lagoon, Neary Lagoon, UCSC, and Natural Bridges are some of the spots where he may be found behind the giant lens. County residents often contact him when unusual birds are sighted. The next time you spot a dark green Toyota Cab Plus pickup at your neighbor's, and an unfamiliar man in his or her back yard, it just might be Bruce out on his next photo op.
