I. Introduction to the collection by Sidney Berger

This collection includes a wide variety of materials concerning paper: its manufacture, mostly by hand, its manifestations, and its varieties.

For more than thirty years the Thomases have been actively involved in the world of paper, as papermakers, book artists, authors, collectors, publishers and lecturers. They are known throughout the world for the imaginative, beautifully crafted, informative books they have produced, first under the imprint Good Book Press, and then under the imprint Peter and Donna Thomas. As prominent artists and bookmakers, as practitioners actively participating in many conference, symposia, exhibitions and other scholarly and craft endeavors, and as active scholars in the field of papermaking and paper history, they have amassed a significant collection of books, pamphlets, cards, sheets, broadsides, sample books and other materials on a wide range of topics with the field. The scope and quality of the items in this collection are remarkable, showing their understanding of the field, especially with respect to what kinds of things will be important to scholars of paper history. A collection like this could have been amassed by only a few people. The Thomases intimate participation in the world of papermaking brought them in contact with scores of important scholars, papermakers, booksellers, librarians, archivists, artists, and collectors. Only this kind of contact, matched with their acumen and insight, would yield a collection as rich and varied as the one presented here.

They have organized these materials into categories, an indication of how well they have though out the scholarly and research value of the materials. The categories are:

1. Books about papermaking printed by the papermaker on their own handmade paper

2. Books about papermaking not printed by the papermaker, but printed on handmade paper or including samples of handmade paper.

3. Important books printed b papermakers on their handmade paper but not about papermaking.

4. Blank books with handmade paper and collections of blank hand made paper.

5. General books on papermaking

6. Pamphlets and ephemera on papermaking

7. Hand papermill record books

8. Keepsake packets from FDH and IAPMA meetings.

Additionally, interspersed in the collection are items that relate to papermaking that do not neatly fall into these seven categories. The materials cover a vast chronology, from incunabula leaves of the fifteenth century to twenty-first century items. The earlier provenance of many pieces adds significantly to their value. There are items signed by Dard Hunter, Mate by John Mason, and created by some of the most important paper artists of the last fifty years. These holdings constitute a superb core collection for teaching purposes, going a long ways to offering a very broad range of things for demonstrating techniques, materials, machinery, supplies, equipment, bindings, printers, papermakers, historical and current practices, watermarks, and so forth.

The materials in this collection are generally superb condition. And because of the nature of most of the items – handmade in restricted quantities – many are unobtainable anywhere else. Further, the fact that these items come from the collection of two of the most prominent people in the world of handmade papers and the artists book gives these items a sterling provenance, and add to their value.

II. General description of the collection:

1. Books about papermaking printed by the papermaker on their own paper.
One might want to consider Dard Hunter's 1950 edition of Papermaking by Hand in America to be the first book to be printed by a papermaker, on his own paper, about the subject of papermaking, since the paper is Hunter's Lime Rock Mill paper. But technically this is probably incorrect, since the paper was most likely made by the Robertsons, who worked the mill, rather than Hunter himself, .If this book is thus eliminated then the first such book was made by Douglas Martin, a student of John Mason. In 1959 he printed a book, with a text about papermaking that he wrote from interviews with John Mason. The books is titled: Papermaking: John Mason, and was made in an edition of 41 copies, 17 are on paper he made with Mason.

The second book to be printed by a papermaker on his own paper about the subject of papermaking might be the variant editions of Some Hand Made Papers that have the second half of the book typed by John Mason, but since these are variants to the Maggs edition which was letterpress printed by various British printers, I feel it must be disqualified. If Mason's book is disqualified then the second book would be the 8 copy edition of "Handmade Paper" made in 1960 by Arthur J. Laws, if we allow typing to qualify as a printing process, for all 8 copies were typed on his typewriter in the style of John Masons books. If we disqualify typing as a printing method then the second book to be printed by a papermaker on his own paper about the subject of papermaking would be Roger Daniels' "Rapid: A Private Paper Mill" which he made at the Melbourne School of Printing and Graphic Arts in 1963. This book features text of how to make paper and photos of equipment including one of his hand cranking hollander beater.

Henry Morris (Bird and Bull Press) printed three books about papermaking on his own paper: Five on Paper, 1963, The Papermaker, 1974 and Nagashizuki, 1979, I do not own any of these books, so they are not included in this list, but clearly have their place in the genre. The next book to be printed by a papermaker on his own paper about the subject of papermaking would be James Weygand's 1969 edition of "Adventure with Paper: An Encounter with a Meat Grinder". And Weygand would hold the title for next three books too, with his 1970 books The Weygand Tightwad Beater: It’s Design and Construction and the two1972 editions: "One Day in the Life of a Papermaker" and "Charlie’s Place". Following Weygand's, the next book to be printed by a papermaker on his own paper about the subject of papermaking was either J Hill Hammon's miniature book " Making Large Sheets of Paper in the Chinese Manner" or Coco Gordon's "Water Mark Papers (Vol. 1)" as both were printed in 1979. These were followed by Walter Hamady's1982 masterpiece, "Papermaking by Hand" but it could be disqualified ... some of the pages, though handmade were not his own handmade paper.
In 1982 Howard and Katheryn Clark of Twinrocker Paper Mill printed Howard Clark's, Beaterman Blues, The text is the lyrics to Howard Clark's song about the struggles of a papermaker. Even though it is not exactly a description of how to make paper it easily qualifies as book about papermaking. A good place to end this short listing list would be with the book we made in 1987, That book was inspired by a visit to Douglas Howell and was titled "Beater Time Tests".

1a. Books about papermaking printed by the papermaker with examples of their own paper.
There were several very interesting books that were printed by papermakers about papermaking that used the papermaker/printers own hand made paper in the book, often as illustrative samples. The Granddaddy of them all would be Hunter's first book about papermaking: Old Papermaking, which he printed in 1923. Although the paper was made at the Hayle Mill, all the samples were made by Hunter. Many of the other books have equally interesting stories, illustrations and samples. Some of the other very interesting items in this list are Ruth Lingen's The Birch Chase, Vance Studley's
Specimens of Handmade Botanical Papers and Jim Yarnell's miniature F.O.B..K.C.

2. Books about papermaking not printed by the papermaker, but printed on handmade paper or including samples of handmade paper.
This category of books contains some of the most interesting books on papermaking. Many of the books which should be listed in this category are early historical books or foreign language books that I do not own, for example Schaffers early books with the beautiful paper samples, and so they are not listed.

3. Books printed by papermakers on their handmade paper but not about papermaking.
These books are of interest to the hand papermaker for various different reasons. Often because of the unique qualities of the paper used to print on and perhaps even more often to admire the sheer tenacity of an individual to make the paper, print and bind the book,

4. Blank books with handmade paper and collections of blank handmade paper.

5. General books on papermaking.
This category includes a variety of "run of the mill" books, both old and new. Included are the early 20th century books like George Clapperton's 1926 manual Practical Papermaking and two romance novels that are set in papermills, Storm in a Tea Pot and The Foolscap Rose. There are many books of practical interest to the papermaker like Les Moulins a Papier: Et les Anciens Papetiers d’Auvergne which fully describes how to make a wooden stamper or John Krill's English Artists Paper. There are a few early catalogues and magazine articles about paper or papermaking and also children's books about the history of papermaking.

6. Pamphlets and ephemera

7. Hand papermill Record Books from the Tuckenhay Papermill in Devon, England.

8. Keepsake packets from FDH and IAPMA meetings.
