Definition: A membrane which lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities, and covers most of the internal organs there. The membrane has two parts: the parietal peritoneum is the part which is closest to the pelvic and abdominal walls (underneath the abdominal muscles and fat layers), and the visceral peritoneum, which is the part that covers the organs. In between, the peritoneum makes fluid so that all these surfaces can slide easily over one another.

Pronunciation: pare i toe NEE um • (noun)

Common Misspellings: paritoneum
