Q&A of the Week: "Adnexial Mass"?

Melissa asks: What is an adnexial mass?

It is an alternative spelling of the more common "adnexal".

The term is a bit confusing, as it really just means "next to", but in gynecology the adnexa is the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterine ligaments (structures "next to" the uterus). A lot of times, any pelvic mass in the vicinity is called an adnexal mass, and it could be almost any kind of mass, such as a cyst, benign tumor, or, possibly, cancer.
